Getting an XML Document instead of my Item number at IPN URL

Hello

I'm sending payments using a simple standard form (POST to /cgi-bin/webscr) from an e-commerce site; everything is ok but sometimes (can't figure out when and why) the item number returned back to IPN URL is [object XMLDocument]. It seems that instead of a simple integer number it returns a DOM, and this is what is printed onto the receipt too. No trace of the original Item no. that the customer claimed to have placed.
