I know this is an older thread, but since you never got a real response... I continue to have the exact same problem as you with Apple Pay. I try to promote the service, and I have one customer that I get the "unable to read card" error on and he is able to use Apple Pay elsewhere with no problem. Makes me look like a jerk. if you ever found a solution, please share.
