Thank you. I swapped my money to GBP and was then able to pay using my Paypal balance. Unfortunately I am not able to change my threat title to SOLVED:... but you solved my problem. Thanks very much. Tim

Addendum I must have insufficient funds in my balance. I am not allowed to top up my balance in Japan. Therefore I can't use my balance unless for items costing (considerably) less than the total balance. It is really annoying -- the funds are trapped. Explanation of problem that I can't solve.... I am trying to purchase something from Aliexpress, the price of which appears to be less than the total available in my PayPal balance. But when I go to make a purchase the small confirm screen that pops up only gives me the option to pay by credit card. In my balance I have *nominally* 3926 JPY which is in fact (since I was paid in the following currencies) 12.23 GBP 20.59 SGD I am trying to purchase something that (again nominally, I think the cost may originally be in dollars or Chinese currency) costs 3335 JPY which would appear to be 591 yen less than my PayPal balance, so I am not sure why I am not offered that method of payment. Could the reason that I am not offered the option of using my PayPal balance be that the currency transfer fees are more than the excess, 591 JPY that I have in my balance? Is it possible to use my balance topped up with a little from my credit card, if I first somehow pay into my balance from my credit card? if it were the case that currency transfer costs 400 yen a shot then another 800-591 JPY =209 JPY might be enough. I want to use my credit card funds as little as possible. Since Paypal is presumably charged credit card fees, I would have though PayPal too would want to encourage the use of PayPal balance. Addendum I see from my list of notifications that I and other have been having the same sort of problem for years. Paypal does not seem to give us full control of which funds (bank, credit card, Paypal balance) from which payments are made, basing them instead of our choice on some arcane rules inside Paypal. I don't seem to be able to paste the URL of that other thread in this comment but the name of the other thread is "Not using my Paypal Balance to Pay for something." (both in the sense of "Paypal is not using my balance" and "I want Paypal to not use my balance").

Is it possible to purchase a sort of cash-code that can be paid into paypal and or given to others? E.g. something like 91234s710198s17234s019283741kjp which would be worth $20 or whatever? Then one could tell someone the passcode, they'd type it in somewhere and get the money?

Eventually I used my wife's credit card to create for her a paypal account and paid with that. As you say, creating two accounts with the same card would result in being @Limited (this %@"! forum is still forcing my keystrokes to be interpretted as if I were using a US keyboard. That was supposed to be limited inside quotation marks.) I was not able to send funds to a second account without a card attached. I am not sure why. So, in its avarice to make an extra few percent on the transactions, paypal forces us to use our account balances first. It is a shame. There is another possibility. Some have said earlier in the thread that if you pay a difference currency to your balance then your balance may not be used. My balance is in USD and UKP and i checked to see if my last JPY purchase had been paid with my balance, and alas it had. But then I noticed that in Settings (top right cog)>Payments> Preapproved Payments>　Set available Funding Sources> Conversion Options > Bill me in the currency of the sellers invoice (rather than use paypal's conversion) *might* have the desired effect. But then this is in a Preapproved Payments sub-setting so it may make no difference to normal payments. I can find no Japanese shops that use paypal that I want to purchase from to test this possibility. Good luck Tim

And now I tried the other obvious would-be-solution of attempting to pay the business expense with the new account but when I try and register the same card I am told I am sorry but your request can't be carried out now. Try again later. Why? I see that it is probably because I had not yet confirmed my email. But, I read on another website (whose URL I cannot paste) that if I attempt to connect the same card to two accounts (business and personal) then my account will be locked or "limited". Perhaps my accoutn is already locked! I can still log into my other account. I don't want my account locked or limited, so linking to a second account is too dangerous. Aaargh! Paypal. It is natural to want to seperate personal and business expenses!

And anyway, I tried making a test payment to the other account to see if a <<this is a present>> option was given, and was told We're sorry but this recipient can't accept payments right now. Whenever I tap the quotation marks key on my Japanese keyboard, this paypal forum converts it to an <<at mark>> which would be at the same place on a US keyboard. And I sure wish I could edit my previous posts rather than making additions in this way. This is upsetting. I can understand how paypal does not want to pay the credit card company, so wants to use the paypal balance first, and allowing this to be a default is quite understandable, but not allowing us to turn it off is really painful. And I have reached the deadline for payment not realising that the conference requires paypal. Ouch.

I was about to send myself the balance but it says the seller pays the fee and I am not seeing a present option.

I am pretty sure that paypal takes from my balance in another currency. I will see about transfering the balance to another account but, won't there be a fee? It is a pain to create another account.

I do not see anyway to turn off the use of my balance. I have to pay a conference fee which is a business expense. I don't want to use my balance which is personal funds. I wish it were possible to choose where the funds come from. TT
