Does a recurring subscription require a balance in...

I have a client who recently signed up for a PayPal account with their credit card, however they are unable to sign up for a recurring subscription on my website with their PayPal account. I am told they have to have a balance in their account before they can be set up for a recurring payment despite having a credit card associated with their PayPal account.    Specifically, this is what I was told by a third party:  Credit card attached to account is not ok with recurring API. Money must be in account for PayPal to process the transaction. If not, it will mark payment as incomplete (not done) and reset client account.   Is this correct? If so, is there a way to set up a recurring invoice they can pay from?   I do not use ordinary subscription buttons on my website as my subscription levels are tied into other settings on my site -- like how long a subscription lasts, how many items they get with their subscription, etc.   Thanks. ... Thanks for the response. It's my store. The website is http://txhorseproperties.com. Agents can sign up for a membership package to add listings to the website. A new paying customer tried to sign up for a recurring package. Being new to PayPal, she had to sign up for an account to use her credit card, but the payment did not go through.   All my "live" tests have been done using my own test PayPal account and they have been based on there being a balance in the account, however on one test, the subscription cleaned out the balance and took the remainder from a credit card associated with the account.   So I am completely confused. I am not able to receive payments from people using their credit cards to pay for services. Here's a message from one client:   When I click the PayPal option on your site, it takes me to my paypal account. I click purchase and it immediately goes back to your site with no confirmation that the purchase went through. I have verified our PayPal info to make sure it is correct.   I tried to replicate the problem. I signed up for something on my website and selected the option to pay with a credit card. I entered my card info and was sent back to my website with no purchase happening. Same problem as the client.   What am I doing wrong? I think all my PayPal settings are correct, but credit card purchases aren't working at all. Help?   Payments for the same service work fine if I use a PayPal account with either a balance in it or a second source for financing. But no credit cards. ... View more
