PayPal Community

I paid for 2 items I found online using paypal.  Afterwards I tried to contact the seller.  The email address on the website was inactive and referred me to another address but that didn't exist either.  I have also not had confirmation from the seller.  I was concerned about the purchase and contacted Paypal to ask them to return my money but am now in some kind of loop where paypal is asking me to "return the item" but I don't even have confirmation let alone an item to return.  To my knowledge, paypal hasn't actually heard from the seller either.  Now what? ... I've been using eBay and PayPal for well over a decade but just now, when I tried to pay for a bin item, I was taken to a google login screen for my PayPal account (which I've never been directed to before) and then, having logged into paypal I got a message asking for verification and telling me they'd sent a text to my landline !!!   I selected change the option but it's still just asking for a phone number I don't have a  mobile phone so now I can't use paypal at all for eBay puchases.   What on earth is going on here?   It looks suspiciously like some kind of hack! ...
