Vanishing records of payments and reversals off ebay and paypal

There seems to be an occasional glitch in which ebay/paypal shows a payment, then later removes it from the records, with no trace and with no notice that it has been removed.

This has happened to me twice.  Complained to Paypal most recent time, no response.  A payment showed up on my ebay page.  I linked to Paypal, printed shipping label, mailed package.  THEN the payment vanished from ebay page.  And from Paypal.  The item showed on Ebay as no checkout, no payment, but package sent.  On Paypal page, the only record was the shipment.

I contacted Paypal asking what is going on, got no response.  The buyer was more cooperative.  Although he offered no insight into what had happened (i.e. whether he he in fact paid previously or not) he paid promptly and it was recorded this time.

Similar thing happened several months ago.  Payment was received, including Prority Mail shipping.  I linked to Paypal and printed label.  Next morning before dropping it in the mail, I reviewed ebay and Paypal pages and found the payment I had honored was GONE.  Not only that, but the EMAIL from Paypal notifying me of the payment was gone, as well.  I knew that email HAD BEEN THERE because that was how I first noticed that the payment had been made.   No trace of anything except the shipping label transaction.   A few hours later a new payment showed up from that buyer, but this time it was for a smaller amount and paid for Parcel Post.

I was able to cancel the first label and have a new one printed.  Sorry now I did not complain to ebay and paypal then; felt kind of foolish with no documentation.   In both cases, the only ''documentaion" I had was the record of the shipping label that Paypal allowed me to print, and the absence of any payment record that would have been necessary to print the label in the first place.

My concern is not that they may have made mistakes, may have shown payments that were not actually made, but that for whatever reason they appeared in the first place, somebody was (1) able to remove them from the records; and (2) no notice was given to me that they were being or had been removed.   This is NOT an appropriate way to handle financial records, and causes mistrust in their system.

It seems a terrible waste to have to print out every ebay and paypal page immediately when it appears, in order to have a correct record for the tiny percentage of times they play games, but it may be necessary.

Paypal cannot delete an email that they've already sent you - only someone at your computer can do that.

Perhaps you're looking in the wrong spot?

If anyone else has comments, I would appreciate them to concentrate on Paypal's actions, not whether I know where to find my email.  Thanks anyway.

Obviously, you do NOT know where to find your email or you would not have posted that the email that Paypal sent you has disappeared.

emails don't disappear - you have to delete them and, even then, they're in your deleted file for a month.

Your comments would be reasonable if my email files were resident on my computer, not necessarily so when a third party controls them in their system.  Frankly this is the first instance I have encountered (that I noticed anyway) where an email was retracted from my (name deleted to avoid endless irrelevant remarks) account.  I recall years ago having the option in my workplace of retracting emails.  Of course, copies that had been opened (and saved) onto recipients' computers were not retracted.

Meanwhile I have may have thought up a test-trap to catch them in the act, without having to print out everything they send me.  I will have a friend buy something from me, pay by Paypal, then attempt to cancel his payment.  We shall see.

I too have a similar problem. I have been a Paypal member for quite some time. I went to my account this evening and there is absolutely no history on my account! Nothing at all> I even did the search thing for 2 years back and nothing. All of my personal info is gone as well. Credit card and bank numbers...gone. I have not gotten a response from any of my emails to Paypal or Ebay yet but it's early in the game. I am worried though.

There are 2 ways to see your history - one is by using the button (which doesn't seem to work right now) and the other is by clicking on the "View all of my transactions" link just above the individual transactions and to the right.

Try the second way and see if it works.

If it doesn't work, then make sure that you're in the correct Paypal account.

If THAT doesn't work, I'd phone paypal - their number comes up when you click on 'contact us'.

Smiley Very Happy

Good info from Paypal Security, satisfied that Paypal was not at fault!

Apparently a buyer can mark the item as "paid" and that shows up on seller's ebay page.  Whether of not he has actually paid.

If seller links to Paypal to print a shipping label, it only takes a "paid" mark to let it happen, to go to USPS for actual label printing.

In the future I will verify that each payment has actually been made.  i.e., that Paypal has the payment in my history.  And that they have sent a confirming email.   Without those, Paypal will deny any knowledge of the payment and certainly will not offer seller protection for it.

Yeah, but you wouldn't get a payment email for that.
