PayPal has taken money from direct debit, not showing up on PayPal, help!

Help! Paypal has randomly taken money out of my direct debit account today and I have no idea what it is! It doesn't show anything on Paypal, only on my online banking account. I have no subscriptions, nothing. I use PayPal solely for earning money on the side. I've phoned my bank and they said to contact PayPal. They've given me a reference to give to PayPal but I can't get to anyone or anything that can help me. Please, I am very stressed right now and would love some directions on how to get this refunded or looked at! I am so confused and annoyed right now.

Sure its not an old transaction just showing as the last purchase you made funded by your bank account in your online banking statement?  >>>

When you add a bank account to paypal it sets up the direct debit mandate so that paypal can take authorised payments for any purchases you make (or pay your Ebay fees).
No company eg water/electric can take funds from your bank account on a regular basis without that direct debit.
However the amount shown is always the ''last'' transaction / amount that you paid to a seller via paypal.

I should probably update this thread as I thought it was weird. Ended up phoning my bank and they put me forward to the fraud team. Turned out someone had my new bank card and started making online transcations with it, (obviously through paypal somehow). They cancelled the card and got the money back. It's all good now!
