Receiving payment

I have a customer who created an PayPal account so she could pay for items she wanted to buy from me.  She sent the payment through her account to pay me but I haven't received any payment yet. I didn't send her an invoice because she didnt give me any email. Will that have something to do with it? How long does it take to receive the payment.  Or do I absolutely have to do an invoice?
