I want to know why this happened

I made a purchase last night through PayPal. Normally I have it set to take the funds from a checking account so that I only spend money I have. This time I personally changed the payment method to have the charge made to a credit card.
However, when I looked just a few minutes ago, the charge was taken right out of my PayPal balance (I had recently received a payment for something) instead of charging to the credit card. Why is that?

When you pay for something, the first thing PayPal does is check your PayPal balance to see if you have enough to cover the payment. If you do, PayPal will use your balance to make the payment. If you don’t have money in your balance, you can choose to pay directly from your bank account or your debit or credit card.
