How to prevent recurring payments

When I make a one-time payment to a merchant, I don't want to give them permission to start recurring payments. Merchants always do this behind our back and PayPal does not even inform us about that. I don't see a way that I can prevent any recurring payment. I simple DO NOT WANT to allow any merchant to charge me in a recurring payment. I want to allow each and every payment through PayPal. Unfortunately, PayPal does not even think about customers in this issue. It only cares about merchants. If PayPal does not have any way of preventing recurring payments, I can as well just close my PayPal account. Does anybody know about any way to prevent any recurring payment?

This recurring payment issue is a big one. Nobody knows that a recurring payment is initiated. PayPal does not even show it on main page. One has to dig hard through the PayPal website to find about recurring payments. This is not acceptable. How is PayPal a secure payment method if a random merchant can charge as they want w/out my concent? This issue calls for a class action lawsuit against PayPal.

try this

  1. Log in to your PayPal account.
  2. Click "Profile" at the top of the page.
  3. Click "My money."
  4. Click "Update" beside "My preapproved payments."
  5. Click the merchant name for the plan you want to cancel.
  6. Click “Cancel” or “Cancel Automatic Billing” at the top of the page.

Thanks. This is the way to cancel one recurring payment, but it does not prevent a merchant from even starting a recurring payment. That was what I wanted, to block any merchant from starting a recurring payment.
