Temporary hold

Hi, I recently bought my son a new jacket on ebay, it was a classified ad, not an auction. Unfortunately it was too small, so I packaged it up to return and ordered the next size up. I noticed the return address was different and it asked you to contact the vendor before returning. I contacted the vendor and after sorting the return address we discussed my son's jacket, he suggested a different style as a bigger size was not any longer, so I agreed and he refunded the money for the second jacket there and then and I ordered the different style jacket, which turned out to be perfect. The vendor promised to refund the cost of the original jacket as soon as it arrived back with him. On my Paypal account you can clearly see the payment for the original jacket on the 30th May, you can then see the payment for the bigger jacket and the payment for different style jacket on the 2nd June, on this date you can also see the refund for the bigger jacket and the fact that Paypal have put it on Tempoary Hold, unfortunately I have no idea why or what for. The refund for the original jacket that was too small and returned was refunded on the 7th June, which appears to have gone through, making the Tempoary Hold even more baffling!?! Why would all 3 payments and 1 refund go through okay but the other refund has been held up, it seems that it's my money and I'm the only one losing out!

This arises because your seller has refunded you before your initial payment to them has cleared from your bank to PayPal.

When you sent your payment, the money is not instantly transferred from your bank account to the recipient’s PayPal account. Instead paypal instantly credit the recipient's PayPal account on your behalf and simultaneously request the same amount from your bank account to reimburse themselves.

It takes 5-7 business days for the money to arrive from your bank to PayPal (same timeframe and method as an eCheque in fact). If your Instant Bank Transfer is refunded, this refund cannot be completed until paypal receive the money from your bank to cover the original payment paypal made.

A ‘Temporary Hold’ is ‘Placed’ on your refund while your bank processes your initial transfer request. When paypal receive the money from your bank, it will be credited to your PayPal balance.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply, I understand that, it makes perfect sense. It's just a shame you state 5-7 business days, but on the email I received direct from Paypal it states "3 or 4 working days". I'd rather know that it could be 5-7 days up front and then if it does take less, that's a bonus, but if it does take longer, which it obviously has, I won't start panicking thinking something has gone wrong.

Well sorry about that, I do the best I can, I don't work for paypal and only logged on after a hard day at work.

Hi,

Don't be like that! I thanked you for your reply, I was complaining that Paypal said it would only take 3 or 4 days. My point was if you knew and could explain it accurately, why couldn't they. I was grateful for your reply and appreciate that you are a voluteer, if you've had a busy day I suggest you take some time out for yourself. I only mentioned about the Paypal email thinking that there was a point to this and it would get fed back and then we wouldn't need to have these conversations, I also work very hard and have better things to do.

Regards.
