PayPal didn't cancel subscription

Basically I had a subscription set up and cancelled it via PayPal automated phone sysytem. The next day I received an email saying the payment had still been taken out, I called PayPal that day who assured me no payment was taken (wasn't appearing on my bank account so I couldn't see if this was true or not) although the woman couldn't explain why I received the email. Anyway over the weekend when checking my bank account I see the payment did go through. Does anyone know the steps to getting a refund as I have tried emailing someone who hasn't read my email as he's come back with a generic reply and I don't really trust the people on the phone know what they're doing. I'm in two minds whether to just report PayPal to the financial ombudsman. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Please review this link to ensure the Billing Agreement is now cancelled on your PayPal Account - Cancelling a Subscription/Pre-Approved Payment

 

You can open a dispute on PayPal for the Billing Agreement payment that has been taken -  Open Dispute - there is no guarantee the merchant will refund you but we will communicate between yourself and the merchant.
