How do you allow a customer to enter a coupon code for a discount during checkout?

How do you add a place where a customer checking out on a website can enter a coupon code that will take a dollar amount, or a percentage off of the total during checkout? Can it be done or not? f so, How?? I think it can be done on an invoice, but I use pay now buttons and want to include that function on my website
