so if I have a paypal balance of $40 and I want to buy something for $50 does it take out of that balance and then I use a credit card to pay for the remaining $10? or do I have to pay for the $50 with the card?

Hi there,
Welcome tot he PayPal Community.
That is correct, however you need to make sure that you choose the PayPal balance as a payment option during checkout. The remaining balance will then be taken from your card.
