Pay in 3 “late fee”

I purchased an item using Pay in 3 and registered my usual card as payment preference. First 2 payments went through as normal but I’ve just received an email to say I’ve been charged a late fee of £12 on the 3rd. For no reason, there’s nothing wrong with my card or bank account! I’ve just paid the last instalment and the late fee( with the same card!) to avoid any future issue but I’d like a refund of the £12! Anyone else experience this?

Yes, been robbed by paypal as well for this. On hold with them now. They better not have **bleep** up my credit rating.

Turns out this can happen if your card is not confirmed in your account. They don't tell you this ahead of time and sometimes the payment works and sometimes it doesn't. Poor show from Paypal.

Thanks. I phoned and made it clear that I was not happy. The assistant just kept giggling! Anyway she says she had refunded my £12, to appear in my PP balance within 7 days. So if it happens, it’s worth making a fuss .

Yes they refunded the £12 to me as well. Did they give you the same reason - card not confirmed? I have also raised a formal complaint with them as it's not fair. Just hope nothing is recorded against credit score.

No, they gave me no reason. My card is confirmed . When she said ‘ you didn’t pay the 3rd instalment’, I replied “It’s an automatic payment”. Silence. Then eventually she giggled and said “yes I see that”. Then she disappeared for about 2 minutes and came back and said “ I have refunded your fee”. No apology or explanation😠

I reckon the "card not confirmed" story is nonsense to be honest. Think there was just an issue with PayPal. We'll see if they answer my complaint.

Now received an email from PayPal saying it was a technical error that caused the problem. So it looks like the support agent lied when they said it was my fault as I hadn't confirmed my bank account. PayPal not yet responded to my complaint.

I just got that email too. A ‘technical’ error. I have received the refund but I should not have had to go through all that in the first place!

Hi. Pay in 3 is causing more headaches than it's worth. You have been charged late fees for no good reason, others have mentioned being charged installments twice and I was initially declined it, then allowed it except hadn't actually ordered the item from the merchant. They then told me I had to cancel the plan and pending payment with the merchant who couldn't as no active order there. This has happened to quite a few by a accounts. I won't be using it again.
