PayPal Pay buttons a mysterious process

I am trying to implement a PayPal Pay Button installation on a website running under WordPress. The code we had been using, configured under Form Maker, just stopped working after several years of regular use. I'm finding the configuration to be baffling.
I am trying to configure this to collect fees for an annual conference. Because of different registration tiers and extras like a workshop and guest lunches, there are about seven items for purchase.
My first effort generated a button panel that listed PayPal, Venmo, and credit cards as options. We don't have a Venmo account, but I couldn't find any way to delete that option. Clicking on the PayPal button took me to a payment screen, but going back and clicking the Checkout button (for the credit cards) crashed the page.
I tried another approach ("Build Your Pay Links and Buttons") and got code that gave me a single confusing drop-down menu, with no option to choose more than one item. If a user wanted to register for the conference and buy a guest lunch, they were out of luck.
It's more than a little frustrating that there is no option for one-on-one technical support. I know this is an expensive resource, but it's necessary so long as documentation and help files are so sketchy and unhelpful.
