On Hold for an hour and a half... and counting.

Is there any point in continuing to wait for these... People to get me out of this hole, or did they just dump me in an endless hole? How do I avoid this in future?

I've been waiting one and half hours for a call back that the computer said would take 17 minutes.  They are having some serious problems today.
