Chip and Swipe Reader

I'm not sure why I'm having trouble powering off the chip and swipe reader? You would think it would be as simple as pushing the power button, but that doesn't do anything. What ends up happening is that my battery drains and then it's on low battery when I need to take a payment. I've tried holding the power button down briefly, for three seconds, ten seconds, and thirty seconds but it won't power off. Any suggestions?

I have the exact same problem with my reader. It is frustrating to get ready to run a card and find the reader is either dead or doesn't have enough power to run the card which leaves the only option of manually entering the card info and paying higher fees. I'm hoping to get an answer to this question myself or if it's a reader issue a new reader.
