Paypal is not recognizing my email address and giving an error. Will not allow "forgot password"

I had a Paypal account using my email address. I don't even remember why, but I created a new one using a different email address. But I want to go back to my old email address. When I tried to add it to the new account, it says there's already an account with that email. Ok no problem. So I tried to log into my old account, and it just gives me an error. I tried "forgot password" but it's as if that email doesn't exist in the system. So how do I get into it again to delete the account or just change the email address?
