Help PayPal charged my bank account a week after payment!

Hi all, I thought i understood PayPal fairly well by now but clearly not. I went to go and buy something online earlier on this week, I didn't have online banking but normally when I go and buy something and there's not enough funds in my bank account the transaction is declined so I know I don't have the money. However when I went to purchase this item through PayPal the transaction was successful therefore I thought there must have been funds in my bank account. (Also I don't have a overdraft on my account) Later on in the week when I got paid PayPal then took the money out of my account then rather than when I paid for the item. How do I stop this from happening in the future.

Firstly when you pay if there are no funds in your bank account then paypal will try again a few days later, if there are still no funds then they will try and take it from your back up funding source.

If that fails then they will put your paypal account into negative and limit it until you pay them back again.

This is because when you pay a seller it is never instant if you fund it from your bank account, paypal CREDIT the seller and then they take the wait for the funds to transfer to pay them back.

The funds can leave your bank account any time from 2 hours up to 3 days later and if it fails then the process i put in my first paragraph applies.

It is up to you to make sure you have funds when you pay.
