A credit casd is safer, but most branded debit cards (vias, M/C) iffer the same protection as a credit card.
My visa debit card has chargeback rights, I have charged back twice in last 4 years (non ebay purchases) and have had no problem getting my money back.
Check with you bank to see how you debit card can protect you.
