Shipped item via Priority, arrived damaged

I shipped an item via Priority. Marked it as fragile and it was still damaged. I have told the buyer i will refund they money but would like to lessend the blow. It was sent via Priority.  Paypal tells me it was covered and to deal directly with USPS.  USPS website says Priority is not covered for damage.  Any help would be appreciated.
