No, I did not have to call PayPal. I did everything online and communicated with a resolution agent through PayPal. I didn't even have to contact my credit card company, although I was ready to.
I did the same. I finally communicated with PayPal via chat and they gave me a credit equal to my full purchase price. I have to use it in 6 months, but that's ok. I don't think the company will see any consequences though.
