Scammed out of $2k

About a week ago my school sent out a job ad, and being a broke college student in need of money and making my parents proud I apply. I get an email and a text later that day that I got accepted for the job and I will be working remotely purchasing things for his office as he's a Doctor. The check arrives, I deposit and get back with him. He tells me to send money through PayPal to his "clients". This is my first red flag here but I didn't want to say anything to him as I wanted to show my parents I am capable of working and that I don't just stress over little things, and also this check was over $1000 and I didn't want him to report me to the police for effectively stealing a decent amount of money from him. I agree and send the money. He tells me to send it again right after, then after that again, all in the amounts of $500 each. He then tells me to do again to a different address. After I finish these transactions he tells me that's all I need to do.

 

Fast forward a few days later my bank account is completely frozen. I contact my Credit Union and they inform me the check bounced and it was all a scam. They tell me the best I can do is contact PayPal. I contact PayPal and they tell me as it was done through Family and Friends I'm the one at fault and I would need to contact my bank to initiate a chargeback. As I'm getting two mixed messages I want to know what I need to do to get my money back. I'm down a lot of money, and I need to make a lot of medical payments that I'm not sure if I can make at this point. I just contacted my Credit Union, but it's the weekend and I won't get a response until Monday. In this situation is there nothing at all that PayPal can do?

A friends/family payment is giving someone a 'gift' of money and as you did so voluntarily then you are not covered for paypal buyer protection.

However if you funded your paypal payment via a credit card then you may be able to do a chargeback directly via your card issuer BUT they may refuse as well as it was not a payment for goods/services which is normally what they give you protection against.

So PayPal is saying it's my fault I got scammed and they won't do anything. What a great business
