Person claimed via bank about unauthorised Transaction months after it happened. Paid with F&F

Hey everyone. Just having a little breakdown here. I’m in a buy and sell forum and someone I trusted quite well paid £310 for an item. Now 2 months later they’ve made a claim against me saying the transaction was unauthorised. Which I find a little suspicious. How does it take 2 months to find out ‘someone hacked’ their account? This has also happened to another person I know. But they’ve all had the same surnames but different email addresses, so I’m guessing he’s professionally scamming people now. He’s also send out different addresses too. As paid me but there was no address on the ‘money received’ page so he sent me one via text. I’ve also confirmed this via messaging another person I know who has had the same thing happen to them. It’s not fun to go through this 😞 hard earned money going down the drain… with bills to pay etc. This has been really unfair. I’ve trusted, used and paid with PayPal for years, never expected this…Anyone know anything I can do about it? Thank you for reading.

If you had no address then did he pay using goods/services or friends/family?

Its against Paypal rules to accept a family / friends payment for selling goods and you risk your Paypal account being limited if you do so.

A buyer would not be able to open a Paypal dispute for non-receipt of item OR item not as described as they would have no Paypal buyer protection.

However they can still open a dispute for an unauthorised transaction OR do a chargeback (via their card issuer) and you may well lose as you would have no Paypal seller protection.

Yeah that’s where I’m struggling. I’ve always used goods and services. But I gave my email and he paid friends and family and I didn’t realise until later on. I trusted the person so I thought nothing of it.

Oh dear, sounds as if your so called buyer planned it that way.

Always check, if no fee charged then the payment was sent as friends/family, if thats the case refund.

To avoid this happening always send a money request or invoice fully describing the item you are selling.
