Paypal stopped using bank transfer and switched to charging my credit card

For years, my purchases using my Paypal account were handled through an instant transfer from my designated checking account. For about a week or so, all purchases have been charged against my credit card. I did not explicitly ask for this change to be made. Has this happened to other people? What can I do to return to the preference I had previously enjoyed?

Thank you for coming back to let us know the outcome. I thought that might be the case.

Your statement about the credit card being about to expire does not hold water as I do not have and WILL NOT have a CC connected to paypal. However today I am having charges refused by paypal. I want to know how to put this back on a paying basis or I'll simply stop using your service. I do quite a bit of my online payments through paypal, but I have no problem going directly through my credit card if that's what I have to do.

I have a verified bank account that I have always used for instant payments. I DO NOT want to use a credit card. The credit card I used to have on my PayPal account is totally irrelevant to my bank account. Whether is is about to expire does not affect my bank account and should not make any difference to the status of payments through my bank account. Yet Netflix is unable to process my monthly payment which is set up to go through my bank account.
To confirm that my PayPal account was working properly, I just purchased a small item from eBay and was forced by PayPal to use an echeck! What the heck!!! All I want to do is have my payments go through the ample funds in my checking account, as they have for years.
Please fix this, PayPal, or tell me how to correct the situation. The current system is untenable..

It does not matter that your credit card is not associated with your bank, neither is mine. If the credit card expiration date recently changed, EVEN THOUGH YOUR PROFILE HAS THE CORRECT EXPIRATION DATE, a PayPal Customer Service person must delete and reestablish your credit card to make your instant bank transfers work again. It didn't make any sense to me either but it fixed the problem.

alcoholboy: That's correct. That's something our engineers are working on. It should not require manual intervention to make it work, but that is currently the workaround.
To everyone else: In order to have the ability to use Instant Transfer, you must have a valid Back Up Funding Source (BUFS) on file, and it must be one that would be valid weeks from now. The reason is simple. When you make a payment using Instant Transfer, PayPal pays the seller up front for you while we wait for the funds to clear on the back end. It can take 3-4 business days (5-7 in some non-US countries) to find out whether or not the funds have cleared. If the bank gets back to us at the end of that time and says there weren't sufficient funds, PayPal waits a couple more days or so for circumstances to change on the funding source that was selected for the transaction and tries again later. If the bank says "NSF" again, that's when the Back Up Funding Source would come into play. In a situation where a card is getting close to expiration, the system will not allow it to act as a BUFS, just in case of the worst-case scenario.
It would, however, allow as to be used as an immediate funding source because the charge would be run immediately while the system knows it's still valid and unexpired. For every transaction you make, it is important to review the details prior to committing to purchase. The funding source will be listed for your approval.
I hope this makes more sense now. Please let me know if you have more questions!
