Hotel Preauthorization

When I stay at a hotel later this month, they will want to preauthorize a card (I intend to present my PayPal debit), but what I need to know is this:
The room and tax are already prepaid. The authorization that the hotel puts through will only be for incidental costs. Because I don't plan on having any, the authorization will not become a "finalized charge."
Hotels are tricky as to how they like to do this: Some will just take the card and not preauth it at all. Others like to preauth up to $100 per night or more.
If the hotel preauthorizes a charge that exceeds the balance in my PayPal account, does PayPal immediately collect those funds from my backup funding source? Or what actually happens under these circumstances?
