I have just sold an item on ebay.  My computer estimates that the Paypal cost, for the £8.00p item should be £0.43p and £7.53 should have been deposited in the account.

Paypal have helped themselves to £0.55p meaning that the deposit is only £7.45p.  Can anyone tell me why.

The charges for Bulgaria equate to 4.4% which would explain the higher cost.  Thank you for your assistance in solving this problem.  I just wish PayPal could make it more obvious what had happened.

Was it an international transaction?

I am not 100% certain of that fact.  The item has gone to Middlesex but the buyer has been registered with ebay since 2007, in Bulgaria,  I have to suppose then that the paypal account he uses is in Bulgaria and he is in the UK temporarily.

Is there any way of finding out what currency was used to pay for the item?

He probably paid in the currency of his country and then you got cross border and currency conversion charges that would probably equate to what you were charged.
