Phishing Scam

I've just received an email (29.05.14) stating I've sent a mobile payment of £85.64 to a Richard Huw Edwards Evans. I a) don't know this man and b) have not purchased anything via PayPal of this amount. I'm incredibly concerned. Although it doesn't ask for payment, it states that a message has been sent to the recipient to either refuse or accept the payment and there are links within the email. Is this a phishing scam?

You will know an email is not from PayPal when:

•The email uses a generic greeting like 'Dear user' or 'Hello, PayPal member’.
•The email requests financial and other personal information.
•The email includes an attachment, a software update to install on your computer.

I also received a phishing email that said it was from PayPal on 5/29/2014. It

  • Had NO Greeting
  • Did NOT ask for Financial or Personal Information
  • Did NOT ask me to download any upgrades

It did however have an attachment that it wanted me to open and fill out which I did not do as it looked suspicious to me so I sent it to spoof@paypal.com for them to verify that it had not been sent from PayPal to me. That is what I would suggest that you do with your email to ease your mind and be sure this is not anything you need to concern yourself with.

These people who are professional scam artists are always looking for new ways to steal personal information and threaten peoples security. PayPal has taken measures to ensure our protection as well as they can but we still need to use common sense. PayPal also offers the spoof service and encourages us to use it freely so instead of guessing I would opt to send them your email and get their opinion. They are quick and will have an answer to you swiftly.
