Car Purchase Scam eBay

Hello

Just a message to warn fellow ebay users.

My Mother is totally devasted and humiliated.

Her and my Stepdad found a Range Rover Sport 07 Plate on eBay for just shy of £8,000. Now this money was from selling their old car and savings.

Anyway, they go into 'Buty It Now' after reading about it etc and eBay doesn't allow this for some reason, they had to 'Contact Seller'. After contacting the seller, he said a direct bank transfer is the only way he could do this. We looked on DVLA to ensure it wasn't stolen etc and he forwarded us his bank details and contact number. After sending the £8,000 over, he sent us documents about the car i.e MOT etc and assured us the car would be shipped to my stepdads work address within 5 working days. It got to Wednesday and we ahd heard nothing (they said they would contact us 6 hours before delivery) so my Mother rang the number. It was a landline from Manchester, however the dialing tone wasn't one I'd ever heard and the voicemail was Asian. She got in touch with him and asked how long before delivery and he mumbled something and ended the call with 'It's a scam'. Hasn't answered the phone since and obviously their listing was removed when we foolishly sent money over. Police have been informed and the fraud and scam teams and we are working with the banks to catch this thieving tosser.

Just beware of car scams people it's downright vile and I hope he gets jailed and exposed to immense pain when he's in there. 🙂

Ebay advises >>

If you win the Auction contact the seller by email straight away and then comply with any terms they set (e.g. deposit straight away by PayPal, collection within 5 days etc

I would only ever do a bank transfer once i was in the sellers house and had viewed the car and then i would do an online payment. I would always collect and never risk it being delivered.

It wasn't an auction it was a simple by it now but the buy it now was grey not blue so when clicking on buy it now it said contact seller directly. We only did what eBay instructed us to do. Only warning others of our mistakes.

A buy it now is the same as an auction once you win it.

Yes you have to contact the seller BUT you did not have to pay via bank transfer straightaway, you could have waited till you collected the car and inspected it before you paid.
