ebay payment when friend is the buyer

Had a friend win an auction tonight and he wants me to make the payment for the item using my paypal account.

Can I pay for the item using just the item number somehow?

Since I am not the winning bidder I really don't know how to make the payment on it for him.

Since you're not the winning bidder u cant pay thru ebay checkout

Your friend can pay as an ebay guest or he can give u the money and if the seller agrees pay straight to the sellers ppal address for "goods" not family/friends

If you and your friend are together in the same location using the same computer, have your friend click on the "Pay Now" for the eBay item and when it asks him to log in to his PayPal account, you can log in to your PayPal account to send the payment.

If you're not together using the same computer, your friend would need to allow you to log in to his eBay account so that you can pay through eBay checkout.
