Old email address reflected on online orders from merchants

Several years ago I created my Paypal account using my personal email account that I had at that time. However, that service was discountined and I moved to a new email address. I was able to go into my Paypal settings and enter my new email address. I was not able to remove the old email address - I am guessing due to my old email address also being my Paypal login user name.
I have experienced the following situation when purchasing from some online merchants that accept Paypal. I was using Guest checkout (that is, I did not create an account on the merchant's website) in these cases. When I entered my Paypal account name (again, which is my old email address), once the payment was processed via Paypal, the email address the merchant's online system obtained from Paypal for me as my old email address, not my new one. Some of the merchants' systems did allow me to update my contact infomation, but not all of them allowed me to change my email address. I had to contact the merchant after the order was submitted and have one of their customer service representatives update my email address associated with my order. Is there any way to fix this? I don't know if it is Paypal that is not providing my new email address or if it is the online ordering system of the merchants that is not designed to pull the email address from Paypal instead of assuming that the Paypal account name is always the email address to use.
Thank you,
Al

hi, recently my hotmail account closed and I couldn't reopen it. I set up a new email address with gmail. I've entered these details on my PayPal account but you won't let me change my primary address from hotmail to my new gmail address. You won't let me delete my old hotmail address. I've purchased an item on eBay but cannot log into my gmail address to pay for it. Have I got to completely close my PayPal account and then open a new account?many thanks Clive Reid.

After adding your new email address to your PayPal account, did you complete the email confirmation process? That's when you click on a link PayPal sends to your new email address or you enter a confirmation number which PayPal sends to your new email address.
If yes, you should be able to 1) make the new email address your primary email address, 2) log in to your PayPal account using either email address, and 3) delete your old email address.

Hi!
even though you've closed your hotmail account and changed to gmail. It doesn't mean that it will automatically close your hotmail paypal account as well. It's highly likely that the hotmail paypal account is still active and that's the reason why you can't add it. either you recover your hotmail paypal account, login to it and then add the gmail address to it (provided that the gmail address is not yet registered to a paypal account) or close down the hotmail paypal account and register a new one using the gmail address. you cannot add an existing paypal account with that email address unless you delete it from that account or close it down.
Hope this helps.
