You go to my accounts, then go to view card details. Next go to update account preferences. Once your there, go to change  in checkout preferences and then choose how you want to pay your items when using paypal. Once you changed it, the next time you use paypal it should be what you chose in the checkout preferences. hope this helps

Does not work for me. I go to the tab named 'My Account' but I have no option anywhere on the page for 'view card details' so I cannot follow the rest of your steps. Perhaps different countries have different paypal websites? I am in Australia, the paypal url starts with https://www.paypal.com/au.

My main problem with not being able to set my credit card as the default backup payment method is that when you use your papal card in a actual store instead of online, you cannot change the backup payment method before finishing the transaction!!!!  This is the reason I never use my papal card.  The money I want to spend is my credit card, not my bank account....not transferring money from credit card to paypal....would rack up fees then....Basically if you are not usign paypal for online purchases and don't have a constant flow of money coming into your paypal account then it is worthless.  Paypal...you really need to listen to your customers and get with the program!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
