Donating safely to support earthquake relief efforts in Mexico

Hi everyone!

I've posted previously about being cautious when donating. In my other post, I advised that there are some bad people out there who would capitalize on tragedy to commit fraud. I wanted to reiterate that here.

Sometimes there are fake charities that crop us when disaster strikes, and this terrible event is no different. PayPal works diligently to stay on top of vetting charities as they become known, to ensure that fraudulent charities are shut down as quickly as possible. In the meantime, we want to equip you with knowledge that will help keep you safe.

Please be cautious and critical when presented with requests for donations. Is the charity well-known? Are you certain that the email or website that is being presented to you is the official one for the charity in question? Are well-established sources promoting the charity? Research is vital for protecting yourself against fraudsters.

For the wonderful folks who wish to donate to help with assistance in Mexico, we have a resource with a few of the charities we've approved. When donating through that page, all transaction fees are covered. The individual organizations may use the donations in different ways, so make sure you read their individual mission statements or visit their websites to stay informed about how gifts to them will be used.

I hope this helps! Please keep being awesome and stay safe!
