Buyer returned item, shows delivered yet I did not receive it

Anyine that can offer me some insight as to what to do:

I sold an item on Ebay ($300) sent it with SC and was received by buyer. Buyer wants to return and shipped it back. Delivery confirmation show that it was delivered back to my zip code however I do not have the item, not did anyone sign for it.

Any insight as to what I should do next? I spoke to our mail delivery person and she says she did not deliver a package to me on that day.

Am I out of the $300 since the buyer wants their refund?

Unfortunately the problem appears to be that item was not insured nor was signature confirmation required for the return delivery.  You have proof of delivery confirmation but, that info can be useless sometimes unless a signature is required.  You're basically stuck with a Post Office issue, not a PayPal issue.  And the Post Office really won't do anything as the package was not insured.  We've run into this type of issue one time, as to where the package went to, it's still a mystery.  The PO simply said it was delivered and as there was no signature or insurance, it was our loss.   As a side note, if you look thru PayPal's User Agreement, any item over $250 should have a Signature Confirmation for delivery.  That thought should also be applied for the return.

So since the buyer is responsible for return shipping, where do I stand as far as refunding or not?

You're responsible for the refund.   Should you choose not to refund and the buyer files a dispute, PayPal most likely will favor the buyer and withdraw the funds for the refund from your account as he or she has proof the item was returned.  (does not matter you actually don't have the item).
