Can I use my ipad mini with the credit card reader?

I don't have an iphone, but I do have an ipad mini with cellular connection. 

Can i use the credit card reader on my ipad instead of the iphone? Does it work the same?

Only way to find out would be to try.  Currently PayPal Here has limited functions on iPads.
