I am both a buyer and a seller. I have always used the invoice function of paypal. But today, I received a payment request for an item I bought. So what is the difference between the two? What are the protections for the buyer with a payment request?

If you already bought the item as you stated, you should not be receving a request for money. The request for money (also invoice) is sent to the prospective buyer BEFORE making the sale.
Both achieve the same purpose but the invoice, when done properly, contains all product information and pictures so it should give better buyer protection for not-as-described. Also, a buyer does not need a PayPal acount to pay an invoice.
