Hold or Chargeback?

Hi,
Today at 12:27 I got a payment I was expecting from a buyer for $750. The money was held by PayPal for 21-days, which is no big deal.
About 2 hours later I shipped out the item and added the tracking info to PayPal.
Now at 5PM I get a email saying this:
"You have received a payment that we believe may not have been authorized by
the PayPal account holder. Here are the details of the transaction we are
investigating"
This is what is says on the transaction page on PayPal:
"This transaction is subject to a Buyer Complaint or a chargeback. Go to the Resolution Center to learn more on resolving this issue."
When I go to the resolution center it says this under reason:
"Inquiry by PayPal Temporary Hold"
When I click more details it says this
"
This payment has been selected for review and we have opened an investigation."
What does it mean the case has been selected for review?
Did the buyer chargeback me or is PayPal just reviewing the transaction to be safe?
I have no idea if PayPal is investigating this or if it's a chargeback - it's extremely unclear.

Also, the funds are not in my pending balance on the summary or money page? Looks like the money is gone...? WTF!

Also, after looking through it, the transaction says "Eligible" for seller protection. I happen to follow everything required for seller protection, but it seems like they just pulled the funds and instantly gave them back to the buyer without even asking for any input from me? What the hell! This is alot of money!

Hey,
The money taken wasn't returned back to the other person. It was put on hold.
I'm currently in this situation as well, deciding whether its a chargeback or hold. Nothing wrong on my end as I deal with high amounts of money weekly.
Can you provide me with an update of your case?

I'm still not sure if it was a chargeback or a hold, it didn't mention any chargeback and said it was a week long review by paypal; but then about 3 days later I got a email saying it was a chargeback. Luckily I won the case due to my evidence, the actual buyer tried to scam me and I could have him charged with the police if I wanted to, but I got the money and everything is fine now. It was very odd how they didn't mention a chargeback initially, they even didn't respond to emails for 3 days until they stated it was a chargeback. Overall I found that PayPal does whatever they choose, email support and phone support is nonexistent.

Oh, no reason, just stated its a 'chargeback'? Bit strange.
I'm in the same situation as you but there was no hold to begin with, I got the money straight away. Sent the item off last week and just few hours ago I received that email. Also this transaction was done through eBay and he left me a positive feedback as well.
Did you try to ring PayPal? I remember I opened a 'non-received case' for an item I bought and never received, so I rang them to escalate the case and they did it straight away (after I was put on hold for 35 minutes) nevertheless, I do rate their customer service over the phone.
Might have to call if there's no update soon. Balance is showing -£450
