Accidentally paid twice for service, vendor canceled 2nd payment, PayPal still took funds

As title says, I had an invoice from a client for a service. The invoice was set up so that I paid it in two installments, once two weeks ago, and the second payment a short while ago. After I made the second payment, the invoice still showed that I was half unpaid, and there was no pop-up or validation statement that said "your payment was made successfully" or anything. My only assumption was that somehow it hadn't gone through. So, I did the process again, and then the same thing happened (no validation of the transaction.) A few minutes pass, and THEN it shows that I've made TWO payments of installment #2 to the client. It also doesn't allow me to cancel either of the payments.
So, I quickly email the client, and within about 20 minutes she says that she's able to "cancel" it (I'm not sure exactly what she canceled, acceptance of the second payment? But she assured me that all was well.) However, a few days later, I see "canceled" next to one of the payments, BUT, two separate payouts to the client for $645.00 are removed from my bank account. All I'm trying to find out is 1) is this truly canceled, as it says in my summary, and 2) when will the money be put back into my account?
I also wouldn't mind finding out what happened 3) that caused this in the first place, where I received no notification that my funds had actually gone through the system for a payment - this isn't normal, is it?
