eBay Payment Discrepancy

In February I listed an item on eBay, about 24 hours after I listed said item it was bought out by a 0 rating buyer. As a 0 rating seller, I didn't really care at the time that it was a 0 rating buyer.
I never received any sort of payment on the item, I messaged the user several times asking if they were having technical difficulties and when they intended to pay, assuring them that the sooner I received confirmation of payment the sooner they would receive their item.
In March I opened a case against the buyer to prevent having to pay my dividends to eBay on an item I didn't receive payment on. The buyer marked the item as paid on Feb 25th, but I never received any sort of confirmation of payment in my e-mail or on PayPal.
The buyer never responded to the case, and it closed in my favor. My seller's fee was credited back to me; however two days afterward, when viewing on eBay mobile, the item had a huge "PAID" stamp over it like the rest of the paid items. Confused, I messaged the buyer asking if they had attempted to pay during the open case (never received a response) and then called the eBay support line.
I asked eBay's support if the buyer had in fact paid and why it was being counted against my monthly total, to which I received "The case was closed and the fee was credited back to you". My question was never directly answered and the eBay support tech answered in such a way that I kind of felt like an idiot, so I just assumed that because the case was closed everything else didn't matter.
This morning at 0430 hrs the buyer opened a case against me asking for a full refund. Is this buyer attempting to scam me? or was there some glitch in eBay's system that is at play here?
