For sending money, can I change the made-up name abbreviated from the email, to make it say something else on the bank statement?  Am I restricted to it being the abbreviation of the email?  Thank you.

I am referring to how it will appear on my bank statement, not theres.

Not sure about what you mean about bank statements, there's no features or options to support what you have in mind.

As for the Credit Card Statement name:

Each time one of your customers funds a payment with a credit card, your Credit Card Statement Name will be displayed in the description section on your customer's credit card statement. Your Credit Card Statement Name will appear after "PAYPAL *" (for example, PAYPAL *MYBIZNAME).

Include your Credit Card Statement Name to reduce chargebacks and customer confusion.
The name can be up to 11 or 19 English and/or German characters long, including spaces, and cannot contain special characters (for example: &, #, _, and so on). This name will be converted to ALL CAPS, and may be truncated by some credit card processors.

This is a setting you your PayPal Account Profle.

Login to your account.

Click on Profile.

Click on My Selling Tools.

Under Getting Paid and Managing My Risk.

Look for Block Payments.

Click on Update

Look for:

The Credit Card Statement Name is the name that will appear on your customers' credit card statements.

Edit the name if desired.

You misunderstand, if/when I send someone a small amount of money, I am just asking if I can change what their gobbledeygooked name will be on my bank statement.

Yeah, if I send someone a small amount of money, how do I change what their name will be on my bank statement ?

Bank statement says I sent money to gobbledeygook name.  Can I change the name will appear as, before completeing the transaction, for sorting purposes?  It's just appearances.

Hi, I have the same query.

My bank statement now shows PAYPAL where a payment has been made - i would rather it said "Ebayers name" in there instead as i am constantly having to log in to paypal and check - does anybody know how it can be amended?

Unfortunately not, the only name that can be changed is what I previously pointed out.
