I posted a ring for sale on Cragslist. I receive a text message from someone interested in the ring. I'm asking $1600 for it. He asks for my paypal email which I provided and he sent me a payment of $1700. He is in Oklahoma and I am in Kentucky. It just seems a little too good to be true that this guy is going to offer me $100 more than I'm asking?
Am I covered with PayPal if I continue with this transaction? I don't know what to do. I've never been in a situation like this.
Did you go to paypal.com and log in when you saw this $1700, or was it simply stated in an email/provided via a link in an email that he sent you (or alternatively, a text message)? As it is, I would make sure how you went about it. If he's asking you to send money via Western Union/MoneyGram then that's a definite scam.
Yes! Awesome, I just double checked. The email is actually from a gmail account and not from paypal. I checked my paypal account and I"m not showing anything received either. Thanks a bunch.
Not a problem, glad I could help. Another thing I would make sure of, especially since you're selling, is that your email and/or phone number is confirmed as well, otherwise if a payment is sent to either of those and it is unconfirmed, you won't see any payments either (i.e. if it's sent to your email and your email is not confirmed, then you won't see it. Same for phone number, and they are exclusive.)
This happened to me. I had a phone on ebay for sale. Someone bought it then started sending me emails stating they made the payment. I received what I thought were legit emails from eBay and paypal. They said funds were on hold until I provided the shipping information on my phone. They paid $100 over my asking price too and were from Oklahoma. I called paypal to verify the emails and to see if there was in fact money on hold. To this day no payment has been made.
