Refund to Closed Debit Card/Checking Account

I purchased 2 items with PayPal on eBay (using my debit card). However, I closed that checking account prior to needing to request a refund. I removed the associated debit card from PayPal.

The issue is: refund was sent to my closed account debit card and marked as "Refund - Complete". I've contacted my bank, they see nothing. I've contacted PayPal, and they won't assist.

It's been about 10 days, and still no activity after checking with my old bank (who can still see all activity even on a closed account), and no sign of it getting flagged by PayPal. What steps should I be taking to make sure the money doesn't disappear?

Any info would be great. It's a maddening situation and all I want is a little insight to make sure I'm doing my due diligence.
