Hi
I have a site with several paintings. There's a "buy now" button next to each original painting - however once the pic is purchased I need the buttom to either go away or say "sold" to save selling it twice. Can this be done please

What you have in mind would require some custom scripting and a backend database on your end for automatic monitoring. There are no built in featrues or options with Payments Standard to do that for you on your web page.
The online button creator does have an inventory feature, however the customer must go to the PayPal screens first to find out the status of an item. We sell one of a kind items and use this feature. After the item is sold, no more can be purchased via the PayPal Screens. I then go back to my website and mark the item sold. Very simple and straight forward and easy.
Your other options are, either build what you need yourself or with the help of a developer or go with a 3rd party shopping cart that has the features you need.
Here's a link for carts:
Here's a another service that has inventory features and is easy to work with:
And if the paintings are originals by you, there's always sites like Etsy as they offer built in on screen inventory status.

Hopefully that clears up your question, if so, please mark your post as solved, else someone will tag on with a different question.
