where is your friend and is it freind and family? if your friend is new to Paypal and live in a Euro country like Germany or France,he i required to submit documents if his payments received so far exceed a certain amount,cant remember if it is 2500 or 1500? so your 6k will put him in the situation if he has not submitted any documents,he wil be asked t o do so and that in itself could delay him for days if not weeks while Paypal reviews his documents. if you use a credit card,you would be paying fees ,so he could get less than $6k. there is also currency conversion fee.
