i first rang PayPal... the automated system is a bit difficult when you don't know the details of the fake PayPal account, so probably best to just use your genuine account details at first, so that you can actually speak to someone.  It took me several attempts to speak to someone in the right department who understood what was wrong. After you've spoken with PayPal and they've confirmed that it is identity theft, then it's up to you if you want to call the debt collection company.  PayPal will contact them directly, but I decided I would also call, just to let them know what's happening.   ... Thanks for the reply.  Actually it was a postal letter from PayPal's debt collectors.  It was a genuine letter, but they were looking for a false identity. A few phone calls to PayPal and to the debt collector to explain the identity theft, and it seems to have been taken care of.   Hopefully nothing else will turn up. PayPal and the credit company were very understanding... my only complaint would be the calls being passed back and forward between departments until someone finally took ownership of the case.   ... Has anyone else here been though this and offer advice please....  So, yesterday I received a letter from "Credit Solutions" stating that I owed over £500 to PayPal and that they need to arrange a repayment plan.  This came completely out of the blue.  I had never been contacted by PayPal about this amount, and my two PayPal accounts are in positive balance.  Never had any issues with them. If my name was JOHN DAVID DOE, the letter was addressed to DOE DAVID, which I immediately thought was odd because PayPal don't even know my middle name, as they never asked for it.  Plus the names had been reversed. I called the PayPal fraud dept, who forwarded me to the collections department.  The collections department couldn't help because I don't owe anything on my accounts, so they sent me back to fraud, who hung up.  Called back again (the automated system is such a pain when you are not calling about an unknown account!), and finally got in touch with someone who took ownership of the problem.  I was told that the fraud department would get back in touch by Tuesday, but that this would be dealt with as identity fraud and that they tell "Credit Solutions" to stop contacting me.  So, overall I'm happy with the outcome so far... but I have two worries... 1)  "Credit Solutions" has some really terrible reviews and forum threads about them.  I don't know how long this amount has been outstanding for, and I don't know if there are other transactions or accounts that I am yet to find out about. 2) If someone was able to create a PayPal account in my name/address and were able to withdraw funds, then they surely must have linked a credit/debit card with my address?  I've checked all my credit/debit card statements and there is nothing suspicious.  I have called Lloyds bank, who are the bank where the funds were transferred to, but they said they have no accounts held in my name/address.  How have they been able to do this, and what else is likely to be compromised?  I've checked my credit report and there is nothing I don't recognise. What else is likely to raise it's head in the coming weeks/months? PayPal say that they can't give any further info because of Data Protection, but I thought a fundamental part of Data Protection is that people should have access to all information held about them?  Ok, it's not really me, but up until yesterday they thought it was me. ... Hi everyone, Was hoping to get some advice please. I took a payment over the phone over the weekend, using PayPal Here's method of keying in the card number. The next day the person came to collect the goods from our home. Now, 2 days after the transaction I received an email from the owner of the card who says that he doesn't recognise the transaction and his details must have been stolen. I called the person who placed the order, who said that her boyfriend bought it for her - but the card owner insists he doesn't know her. I know that PayPal seller protection doesn't cover PayPal Here transactions, so where will I stand here?  I'm worried we are going to lose out here... it wasn't just a few quid Also the apparent scammer is a second time buyer from us.  The first purchase being 2 weeks ago using a different card.  This first transaction so far has had no problems, but there's still time yet.   On both occasions the buyer gave us the billing post code for the cards. And her friend called me this evening saying that she had recommended us to her... it's all a bit bizarre. ... View more
