Buyer Claims Damage to Inner Electronics After Rec...

Hello,   A buyer purhcased a high value guitar amplifier and claims that after he received the item, he turned it on to use it and some electronic components went awry and smoke came out the back.     I am going to try my very best to work with this gentleman and come to a resolution without having any disputes/claims be filed.  He feels that he didn't receive what I described was an amp in good working order.  My question is, since the smoke came out the back after he operated it, clearly the unit was functional before, and the issues were experienced after he possessed and turned the unit on.  I have no way of knowing if possible he set the unit up wrong, had stuff plugged in incorrectly, or if simply a vacuum tube got damaged during shipping - then if he didn't inspect this and turned it on, a simple vacuum tube being a problem could have caused a larger problem to the electronics and fried something.   Can he legitimately claim the value against me and return the unit all things considered?  I asked that he get a quote from a local repair shop for repair and that I will work with him depending on the extreme of the amount.  but either one of two things happened - the unit was operated poorly in his possession, causing an electonic breakdown (good luck getting him to believe that) or, the unit was damaged inside somewhere or something came loose during shipping, and upon turning the unit on, it became a larger issue.  I already know how UPS would handle a claim against them because there is no cosmetic damage and they would simply deny a claim stating there's no way of knowing how the unit was operated in his possession, etc.  Would PayPal agree with this sentiment?    Again I'm going to work with this guy but I can not afford hundreds of dollars or the headache associated and woudl really appreciate any advice or direction here!   Thank you so much ...
