If it was from your debit card then it would go back to your bank account but takes about 7 days from when marked as completed. If it was instant transfer than you are correct it should go back to your paypal balance. One thing may have happened. Have you bought and paid for an item using paypal around the time the balance would have credited to your account? If so then paypal will always take from that paypal balance rather than any other funding source. Could you check by clicking on the word "details" by any recent transactions and see if any was funded from your paypal balance rather than your normal funding source.
