How can i tell if i am being scammed?

This is my very first time using pay pal and it might just be that i am a little over concerned, or i might be right in being worried. So my question is i just sold my lab top and i am being paid over pay pal. i got 2 emails from pay pal saying that i have been sent the money that i wanted for the product. The thing is though is that i do not have access to the money until i reply back to one of the emails with a tracking number of which is on the box used to send my labtop. my concern is that i send away my $1000 labtop that i paid a lot for and that i get home and send the tracking number back to pay pal and than im still not able to access the money and the person gets a free labtop. the email says i have to send it first and get the tracking number for "security reasons". So my question is how safe does this sound? and is it normal for pay pal to send emails in which you must send the product away first ,get the tracking number , and than respond back to there email with the number to access the money? ...
