The Microsoft part seems legit. I called the number from the transaction details and it's Microsoft, the seller itself is verified. So the payment was made to them. Now, here's an odd thought - if the person who did it paid their XBox Live or Platinum account with it, then you'd have it easy - call Microsoft tell them you just want to verify what the money was for and that you suspect your kid, get the gamer tag or screen name of the person and take a road trip.   I am not adovacting violence, by the way. This seems to be common, at least as far as my circle of friends is concerned. I actually found this trying to help them to resolve the issue. Paypal seems to not acknowledge this happening and I am a little unsure how this works but I think I can offer an explanation on the "someone sent me money and immediately cancelled it" part.   If you wanted to pay someone from a paypal account you don't control you'd have to make sure there's enough money in the account. Now, what if you couldn't check that? Maybe because you are using an exploit that is not based on the user's password but somehwere inside PayPal's system?   You could send that person the money you'd need to make the payment ($49.99 or whatever), make the payment (which now goes through because the person has that much at least in their account - you put it there), and then cancel the payment.
